County to offer after-hours recycling drop-off
Starting Monday, the county will be placing a recycling trailer at the Henderson County Fairgrounds for after-hours use, Henderson County Solid Waste and Recycling posted on its Facebook page on Saturday.
It said the trailer will be labeled with instructions on what materials will be accepted and how the recycling needs to be placed.
The trailer will be put in place around 3 p.m. each weekday and will be pulled back in around 7 a.m.
“We will also try leaving it out for the weekends,” the post said.
“This should help those that want to recycle but can’t make it to the recycling center during normal business hours,” it said. “However, if people start abusing the container or don’t follow the instructions listed, we (will) be forced to shut the service down.”
Henderson County Solid Waste and Recycling last week began seeking input on its Facebook page from residents about the county recycling center, located at 398 Sam Ball Way beside the fairgrounds just off Airline Road. One of the remarks left with that post requested that the center be open earlier and later than its normal 7 a.m.-3 p.m. weekday operating hours to accommodate those who have 8-to-5 jobs.
The county noted that its recycling center is open 8 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month to accommodate such users.
In related news, the county recently announced:
- The recycling center now offers a free paper shredding service from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday for those who want to watch their documents being shredded. That service previously was offered only from 8 to 11 a.m. on Fridays.
- The 2026 household waste day will be 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 17. The county said a flyer providing details will be available soon.
- Plans are in the works for setting up a day when the recycling center will accept electronics. That date hasn’t been announced yet.
- The next Henderson County Five-Year Solid Waste Management Plan required by state law will be due soon and the county is seeking business owners and citizens to serve on a a Solid Waste Advisory Committee that will meet periodically to help shape the future of recycling here. Interested persons should contact Henderson County Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator Eric Higgs at 270-454-4298.
According to the county website at www.hendersoncountyky.gov/215/Recycling-Solid-Waste, the county recycling center accepts the following:
- Aluminum cans
- Appliances (freon must be removed by an EPA-approved process before it comes to the recycling center and the line must be cut or the appliance will be refused)
- Cardboard and mix board (cereal boxes, pop boxes, etc.)
- Glass Bottles (no plate glass, windows or doorframes)
- Lead acid batteries and regular household batteries
- Lithium batteries (both terminals must be taped up)

Recycling must be pre-sorted and placed in the appropriate container at the recycling center.
Trash and electronics (including TVs) aren’t accepted at the county recycling center except in the case of a special electronics recycling day.
