Henderson County came within inches of making program history Tuesday night.
Instead, the Colonels saw their season end in one of the most dramatic games in 2nd Region history.
In a back-and-forth battle, Lyon County outlasted defending champion Henderson County 64-61 in double overtime in the 2nd Region Championship held at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School. The loss snapped Henderson’s 15-game winning streak and ended the Colonels’ bid to become the first team in program history to win back-to-back regional titles.
The matchup was highly anticipated before the opening tip. Henderson entered the night 26-4 and ranked first in the region’s RPI, with Lyon County just behind. The Colonels were ranked No. 18 in the latest KSR rankings, while the Lyons sat at No. 21. HCHS narrowly won the teams’ regular-season meeting by two points in early February.
Tuesday night’s championship delivered exactly what many expected: a game that could have gone either way.
The opening minutes set the tone immediately. Henderson scored four of its first six with a pair of electrifying dunks from Amare Stewart and Xavion Johnson.
The pace remained frantic throughout the first quarter, with Lyon’s length and trapping defense forcing several Henderson turnovers while Nolan Coffman disrupted several shots at the rim. The Lyons carried a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.
The defensive intensity only increased in the second period as both teams struggled to find clean looks. Henderson briefly grabbed momentum midway through the quarter, taking a 17-15 lead after a layup from Braden Williams. But neither team could create separation.
A steal and basket from Zephaniah Thomas gave the Colonels a brief lead before Jett Reddick responded with a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half to take a narrow 24-23 advantage into the break.
After the halftime break, Henderson delivered what looked like the game’s first decisive run.
The Colonels opened the third quarter on a 10-0 surge, sparked by a three-pointer from Stewart and a coast-to-coast finish from Johnson. Moments later, Thomas stepped into the corner and knocked down a three, his first attempted three-pointer of the entire season, pushing Henderson ahead 33-24.
But Lyon County responded with a run of its own.
The Lyons quickly erased the deficit behind a series of three-pointers and aggressive drives from Bray Kirk, reclaiming the lead late in the third quarter and carrying a 39-35 edge into the final period.
After Lyon pushed its lead to seven points midway through the fourth quarter, Thomas again sparked the Colonels with an old-fashioned three-point play that cut into the deficit. Henderson then forced a turnover with full-court pressure, leading to a basket from Malaikye Taylor that trimmed the margin to two.
Moments later, Travis Little stepped into a three-pointer from the top of the key, giving Henderson a 43-42 lead with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. From there, the game became a possession-by-possession battle.
Johnson attacked the rim to tie the game at 49 with one minute left in regulation. Lyon had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but missed free throws opened the door for Henderson.
The Colonels called a timeout with six seconds remaining and put the ball in Johnson’s hands. His pull-up jumper from just inside the free-throw line drifted off the rim as the buzzer sounded, sending the championship game to overtime.
It was the first 2nd Region championship game to go to overtime since Henderson fell to Christian County in 1979.
And the drama was just beginning.
Lyon appeared to take control in the first overtime, building a four-point lead late. But Henderson refused to go away.
After a defensive stop, Johnson missed a driving attempt in the closing seconds. Williams battled inside for the rebound and tipped the ball back in as time expired, tying the game and forcing a second overtime.
“I saw the opportunity and went back up with it,” Williams said. “I just wanted to win so bad.”
In the second overtime, Thomas delivered again.
The sophomore guard hit his second three of the season on just as many attempts with just over a minute remaining, giving the Colonels a 61-60 lead and capping a career night off the bench.
“I stayed ready and upped the tempo when my number was called,” Thomas said. “I’ve been in the gym and kept working to be ready.”
But the Lyons answered for the final time.
After a Henderson turnover, Lyon regained the lead on a late basket from Coffman, then added two free throws to extend the advantage to three in the final seconds. Henderson still had one last chance, but a long three-pointer from Wyatt Townsend at the buzzer missed, sealing the Lyons’ 64-61 victory.
Johnson led Henderson with 19 points, repeatedly attacking the rim and keeping the Colonels within striking distance throughout the night. Thomas added a career-high 11 points off the bench, while Stewart and Taylor each finished with nine.
Despite the loss, Henderson head coach Tyler Smithhart said the team’s effort defined the night.
“Our guys, man, I couldn’t be more proud,” Smithhart told WSON. “Win or lose, these dudes brought it all season. Everybody counted us out two or three different times in that game, and our guys just never quit.”
Smithhart also told WSON he was proud of the senior leadership that helped guide the Colonels back to the regional championship game.
“Our seniors, that’s the epitome of who they were,” Smithhart said. “Every time someone wanted to count Braden Williams or Travis Little out, they just showed up and went to work.”
Johnson echoed that sentiment after the game.
“I’m really going to miss the seniors,” he said. “It’s been fun to play with them this season, and it really sucks that we couldn’t make it to Rupp for them.”
Still, even in defeat, the Colonels showed the resilience that fueled their 26-win season and 15-game winning streak entering the championship.
And with young players like Johnson, Stewart, and Thomas leading the way, HCHS believes the experience will only fuel the program moving forward.
“We’re going to let this motivate us,” Johnson said. “Then get back in the gym and weight room to be ready for next year.”
Thomas was just as confident.
“We’re going to be back next year.”
