Launch for events involving novel ‘The Women’ is Monday at HCPL
A bestselling work of historical fiction about combat nurses of the Vietnam era will be the focus of a series of programs at Henderson County Public Library that will launch on Veterans Day and take place starting in January.
“The Women,” by author Kristin Hannah, has been selected as a “Resilient Voices: Community Read” selection. One-hundred copies of the bestseller that’s been read and discussed by book clubs across the nation since it was published last year will be available starting Monday, Nov. 11, at the library’s circulation desk to adult readers on a first-come first-served basis.
Those taking a copy are asked to read it, pass it on to someone else and participate in a book discussion group that will take place in January at the library.
Discussion groups are scheduled for:
- Friday, Jan. 10, 10 a.m.-Noon
- Thursday, Jan. 16, 6-8 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m.-Noon
- Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2-4 p.m.
Related programs in “Resilient Voices” will take place in February, March and possibly April. Those include:
- A panel discussion with a Vietnam nurse, a Vietnam Red Cross volunteer and a current female soldier who will share their experiences will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27, 6-7:30 p.m.
- A special Zoom presentation with Diane Carlson Evans, founder of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C., is scheduled for March 11, 5:30-7 p.m. She is the author of “Healing Wounds: A Vietnam War Combat Nurse’s 10-year Fight To Win Women a Place of Honor in Washington, D.C.” Fifty autographed copies of the book will be available to the first 50 people in attendance.
The committee working on the program hopes to announce details about an April program at a later day.

Ky. 351/Second Street will close Sunday evening for paving
Officials with I-69 Ohio River Crossing say paving will begin Sunday long Ky. 351/Second Street and drivers should expect restrictions and closures. They advise planning alternate routes.
Those officials said in a news release that drivers should be aware of several plans, including:
• KY 351/2nd Street/Zion Road will be reduced to a single lane (from Klutey Park Drive to N. Arlington Drive), starting around 5 p.m. Sunday. Flaggers will be in place to direct traffic.
• The US 41 southbound on-ramp and northbound off-ramp, as well as the KY 2084 interchange near Palmer’s Market, are expected to close around the same time and will be closed for several hours.
• The US 41 southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramp will close later in the evening and will be closed for several hours. Drivers can use the KY 2084 interchange as an alternate route.
According to the release, multiple crews will be working to complete the final asphalt surface in a single night, with work beginning Sunday evening and scheduled to be complete by 6 a.m. Monday.
If there is inclement weather, the work is expected to shift to Monday evening with closures not scheduled to begin until 7 p.m. Monday and end by 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The work is part of the final steps to open the KY 351 roundabouts to two lanes open of traffic, said the release. A targeted date to open the roundabouts in their final configuration will be shared closer to time.
Deaconess hosts lung cancer screenings
Deaconess Health System is hosting cancer screenings throughout November as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
The walk-in, same-day lung cancer screening test—a low-dose CT scan—is for those who are at high risk for lung cancer, said a release from Deaconess.
The hospital says you may be eligible if you are:
• Between the ages of 50 and 80 years old
• Current or former smoker
• Have at least a 20-pack-year history of smoking (A pack-year is equal to smoking one pack per day for a year.
You could have a 20 pack-year history by smoking one pack daily for 20 years or by smoking two packs daily for 10 years.)
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancers in men and women.
Early detection of these cancers is shown to save lives.
At Deaconess, we have created a dedicated lung cancer screening program to help detect lung cancer at the earliest stage when it has the best chance of being cured.
This low-dose CT scan uses minimal radiation to take detailed images of the lung and can identify early signs of cancer in high-risk patients.
There will be representatives from Deaconess to help with prescreening and to do the screenings right then.
The events are:
• 8:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the GI Specialty Center on Gateway’s campus, 4011 Gateway Blvd, Newburgh, Ind.
• 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 18 at Deaconess Gibson Hospital, in the Health & Education Room, 1808 Sherman Drive, Princeton, Ind.
• 1-4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25 at Deaconess Henderson Hospital, Elm St. Entrance, 1305 N. Elm St., Henderson, Ky.
At Henderson, the Mega Lung – an inflatable walk-through lung – will be on display through a partnership with Kentucky Cancer Program. The lung is used to show what your lungs look like on the inside and the damage smoking can do. Providers will be on hand at the events for interviews.
