The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program has now opened offering free tax preparation for those who qualify.
There are two places to access VITA program services this year. The Housing Authority site, 111 S. Adams St., opened on Monday, Jan. 27. Hours are Mondays and Tuesdays from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The last day for services is Saturday, April 12, and appointments are required. At Henderson Christian Community Outreach located at 509 Fifth St., where walk-ins are accepted, hours are Wednesdays 3-6 p.m. The last day for services will be Wednesday, April 2. For information, call 270-831-2273.
The service is offered to help people with low to moderate income, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance preparing their tax returns.
IRS-certified volunteers provide free essential income tax return preparation with electronic filing.
All the tax preparation services, including electronic filing in all states, are free.
What do you need to bring?
- Picture ID
- Social Security cards for self, spouse and children, or Individual Taxpayer ID Number (ITIN) for self, spouse and children
- Income information (W-2s)
- Information for other additional income (Social Security, Unemployment, etc.)
- Proof tuition expenses (1098-T from college)
- Information for all deductions and credits
- For Direct Deposit: Personal bank account number and bank’s routing number
- Proof of Health Insurance (1095)
- Intake Form (Recommended but not required.)
