Depot adds stained-glass windows to match the originals
The latest step in the renovation of the former Union Station on Fourth Street is also one of the most visible: the installation of a dozen stained-glass windows.
“These are complete leaded stained-glass pieces that were made to match the originals,” according to Allen Brown II, president and CEO of depot owner Railmark Holdings Inc.
They will soon be backlit with dusk-to-dawn lights, he said.
The decorative windows were among numerous features—brick-and-stone construction, mostly-gone marble fixtures, chandeliers, decorative tile floors, soaring ceilings and a lunch room—that distinguished the 1902 station from those in many comparable-sized cities of the era, according to Brown.
His company acquired the former passenger depot in 2021 and has been slowly stabilizing, renovating and converting the building into the central operations center for Railmark, a railroad services company with 38 employees in 10 states.
Brown is also seeking stories and photos of the old passenger station as well as any artifacts. Interested persons can contact him at TalkToRailmark@railmark.com.
