Mills named to post of the Council of State Governments Southern Office

Henderson state Sen. Robby Mills has been appointed to serve on the Fiscal Affairs and Government Operations Committee of the Council of State Governments Southern Office.

As a committee member, Mills will collaborate with legislators from 15 southern states to address tax policies, government operations, state budgeting and financial oversight, said a release from the Kentucky Senate Majority Caucus.

“By sharing best practices and developing sound financial strategies, we can promote responsible governance and economic growth for Kentucky and our neighboring states,” Mills said in a prepared statement.

The organization’s annual Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) provides policymakers with a platform to discuss key legislative initiatives and explore emerging solutions in governance, said the release.

Mills’s responsibilities as a committee member include:

  • participating in committee sessions and business meetings at the Southern Legislative Conference
  • collaborating with state policymakers on fiscal strategies and government operations
  • reviewing and voting on fiscal policy proposals affecting the region
  • engaging in CSG South-sponsored legislative briefings, fiscal research initiatives, and policy development programs
  • voting on key policy positions and committee leadership roles
  • engaging in CSG South’s policy briefings, webinars and leadership development programs.

Mills will serve for a two-year term ending Dec. 31, 2026.

Man convicted of child sex charges

Commonwealth’s Attorney Herb McKee Jr. announced that on Monday James Andrew Turner was sentenced to 15 years in prison for two counts of promoting sexual performance of a minor, five counts of possession of matter portraying sexual performance of a minor, two counts of advertising matter portraying sexual performance of a minor and tampering with physical evidence.

The charges came from an investigation in January 2024, said a release from McKee’s office.

Promoting sexual performance of a minor is considered a violent crime, and Turner won’t be eligible for parole until he’s served at least 85% of his sentence, said the release. Turner will also be on the sex offender registry for the remainder of his life, said the release.

The Henderson Police Department investigated the case.
