The Henderson City Commission on Dec. 22 approved a municipal order that allows Mayor Brad Staton to negotiate with the owners of the land where Mason Brothers Audubon Chapel once stood.
The vote was unanimous. If an agreement is reached, it would have to be presented to the city commission for a vote of approval at a later meeting.
Staton said the property, if obtained, will be used for economic development in connection to the Inner City Improvement Plan or it could possibly be used in partnership with the work of the Habitat For Humanity of Henderson.
A fire ravaged the former Mason Brothers Audubon Chapel building in late January. Henderson Fire Department officials at the scene of the blaze said the building was a total loss. Since then, the building was razed, and the lot has been cleared.
