Henderson County leaned on defense to secure a 55-44 district road win over Webster County on Friday night, holding the Trojans to their lowest-scoring performance of the season.
It was Jon Newton’s first game against the Colonels since returning as Webster’s head coach.
The win improved Henderson to 11-3 on the season and kept the Colonels undefeated in 2026, while Webster fell to 11-5.
Newton’s return added a vintage feel to a familiar rivalry. Before Friday, he had coached against Henderson County 25 different times as a head coach, the last time coming in 2022. His presence on the sideline brought renewed attention to a series that has often produced close games.
Both teams entered the matchup with double-digit wins, and it was good for local basketball fans to see Henderson and Webster face off as potential contenders for the second region trophy. True to form, nothing came easy as the game unfolded as a defensive grind from start to finish.
Webster was led by freshman Caleb Bumpus, who scored a team-high 13 points with consistent scores at the rim, and Henderson transfer sophomore Jace Shelton, who added 11 points. Still, Henderson’s defense limited Webster’s opportunities down the stretch.
“We were just focusing on our defensive effort,” Mikey Woolfork said. “We prepared pretty hard for this game.”
The Colonels set the tone early, stopping drives short and forcing Webster into tough possessions. Travis Little opened the scoring with a three, and Xavion Johnson attacked the paint. Woolfork provided energy off the bench, especially on defense, helping Henderson disrupt Webster’s rhythm.
“We had the scouting report down,” Woolfork said. “We knew a lot of what was coming.”
Henderson carried a seven-point halftime lead, but Webster stayed close late in the second quarter. Shelton scored off a steal and then hit a one-footed buzzer-beater to make it 27-20 at the break.
WCHS point guard Reid McDyer and Bumpus had opportunities to cut into the lead, but Henderson’s rebounding and rotations kept the Trojans at bay. Notably, Zayden Martin grabbed nine rebounds, and Johnson grabbed 12.
Webster tried to rally, with Shelton hitting his second buzzer-beater of the night to close the third quarter, but Henderson’s defense kept the Trojans from stringing together sustained runs.
HCHS slowed the pace and executed in the half-court in the final quarter. Woolfork scored on a cut, Martin converted an and-one, and Johnson closed the game at the free-throw line. The Colonels limited second-chance points and forced Webster into tough shots throughout the final period.
Henderson held Webster to 44 points, the Trojans’ lowest total of the season.
“Anytime you get a district win on the road, that’s a great win. I’m proud of our guys–I thought they did a great job defensively,” head coach Tyler Smithhart said. “I think, big picture, our effort on the glass and willingness to keep playing hard is our difference maker.”
The win highlighted Henderson’s ability to combine defensive intensity with balanced scoring from Johnson, Little and Stewart. The Colonels improve to 11-3 and will host Newton and Webster County again on February 3.
