Deaconess Henderson Hospital’s goal Wednesday was to remind women to get their annual mammogram at a kickoff gathering for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Jennifer Small, the administrator over Breast Services for Deaconess, said that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. She said in addition to getting a mammogram, another purpose of Wednesday’s event was to urge women to get a mammogram early on.
“Early detection is the key,” she said.
Small recognizes that many young women are busy in their careers and/or taking care of their families.
But she said that a mammogram does not take long—just 15 minutes.
She urged women to set an appointment, even if they were unsure how to pay for it. She said Deaconess would first look to a patient’s insurance, and if that doesn’t cover the charge, then Deaconess will pay for the procedure with Deaconess Foundation money.
Small said an appointment can be scheduled online at the Deaconess Henderson website.
