The Henderson Police Department is hosting a gathering of support for Lt. Stuart O’Nan, who is battling a rare and aggressive type of sarcoma cancer.
The gathering will be 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the parking lot of the HPD station at 1990 Barret Blvd.
According to an HPD post on Monday, O’Nan, a lieutenant in the detective section, began a battle against a rare type of Sarcoma cancer in August 2024. After noticing a lump in his bicep and undergoing numerous visits with specialists, he underwent surgery to remove the mass, which included a skin graft from his thigh.
Since then, Lt. O’Nan has been diligent with doctor’s visits, but a recent follow-up scan revealed that the cancer has returned just above the previous tumor site and is aggressive, said the post.
This past week, he went in for removal, but doctors discovered two concerning enlarged lymph nodes. He went in for hours of surgery, said the post, and was waiting for another surgery to be scheduled.
On Tuesday afternoon, HPD posted that O’Nan is scheduled for another surgery on Monday, so he won’t be in attendance at the gathering.
Later that evening, HPD chaplains Mike Spivey and Greg Shannon will help lead the prayer vigil for O’Nan. Sgt. Bill Russell, the public information officer at HPD, said O’Nan probably has at least two more surgeries after Monday’s.
HPD asks those who attend to Monday evening to wear a yellow shirt in support of Sarcoma cancer awareness.
Family and friends are raising funds to help cover medical costs.
