Henderson County High School has named John Elliott as the new head football coach.
Elliott will take over for head coach Josh Boston, who resigned following the 2024 season and has taken the head coaching job at Nelson County High School.
According to a release from Henderson County Schools, Elliott has 48 years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels in Indiana and Kentucky.
Most recently, he has coached at Evansville North High School (2022–present) and previously served two stints as the defensive side of the ball at Henderson County High School—2008-2010 and 2017-2020.
His background includes head coaching tenures at Tell City High School, Franklin Community High School, South Decatur and Ballard Memorial, said the release.
“I am excited to return to Henderson County and lead this program forward,” said Elliott in a prepared statement. “This community has a rich football tradition, and I look forward to building on its legacy with hard work, discipline and dedication.”
Henderson County High School Athletic Director Nathan Grace said he’s confident in Elliott’s leadership.
“It is not often you have the opportunity to hire a hall of fame inducted coach, but we have found one,” Grace said. “With his demonstrated passion for the game and commitment to developing well-rounded athletes, Coach Elliott is poised to lead our football program to new heights. His experience and vision will build upon the solid foundation established, fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork that upholds the proud traditions of Henderson County.”
Elliott holds a Bachelor of Science from Indiana State University and a Master of Education from Indiana University. He and Denise, have five children: Aaron Elliott, Joey Elliott, Robby Kerner, Nick Kerner, and Danny Kerner.
Elliott was inducted into the Indiana Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2023.
Over his career, he has held numerous leadership roles, including serving on the IFCA Board of Directors and directing the Evansville Football Clinic for a decade. He was also the Defensive Coordinator for the 1999 North/South All-Star Game and the recipient of the Don Watson Award from the Evansville Football Clinic. He will be introduced at a Community Meet & Greet on Tuesday from 4-4:30 p.m. at the Henderson County High School cafeteria. The event is open to the public.
