Henderson Fire Department officials are calling the Mason Brothers Audubon Chapel building a total loss after an early morning fire destroyed the structure.

HFD Division Chief Matt Anderson, at the fire scene at 1322 Helm St. this morning, said the roof collapsed throughout the building. He said there would be no way to salvage it.

HFD Deputy Chief Chad Moore said that the fire started in the attic and investigators were at the scene this morning trying to determine a cause.

Moore said in addition to the heavy damage to the roof, there was also significant water damage to the first floor. He also didn’t think the building could be salvaged.

“I truly doubt it,” he said.

Anderson said there were no bodies awaiting funeral services inside at the time of the fire.

Moore said a call come to 911-Dispatch at 3:02 a.m. The caller gave the description that flames were coming out of the building, he said.

One minute later, HFD’s first unit arrived and firefighters said heavy flames were in the attic area, Moore said.

The deputy chief said the fire was considered under control at about 3:35 a.m. Moore said the fire department didn’t receive any reports of injuries.
