The arrest of Jay Randolph on a charge of first-degree strangulation-domestic violence related involved an altercation with his son, Brecken Randolph, according to a Monday release from the Henderson Police Department.
According to the release, Brecken Randolph called 911 at about 5:30 p.m. Friday and then met officers at the police station, telling them he had left the house after being assaulted by his father.
According to the HPD release:
- Brecken Randoph said a verbal dispute turned physical when Jay Randolph pushed him against a window and placed both hands around his neck
- Brecken Randolph said Jay Randolph applied pressure on his neck with enough force that his breathing was impeded
- Brecken Randolph said Jay Randolph applied pressure for approximately 1 minute before letting go
- Brecken Randolph had marks on his neck that were reportedly from the incident
- An ambulance crew responded to the police station to examine Brecken Randolph. He did not require further medical treatment at the time.
In the citation issued by HPD, Brecken Randolph said the argument started because of his dogs and his wanting to move out of the house.
Jay Randolph denied strangling his son, but did say that there was an altercation in which both men pushed each other, said police, who responded to Jay Randolph’s home at 1300 Loeb St. after interviewing his son Friday.
Jay Randolph said that his son lunged at him and chest-bumped him and that he was defending himself from Brecken, according to the police citation.
Additionally, the citation also says that Brecken Randolph said he never lunged at his father, and Jay Randolph denied strangling his son and said marks on Brecken Randolph’s neck possibly came from when he pushed Brecken.
Jay Randolph’s arrest occurred at 7:03 p.m. Friday, said the citation. He was booked into the Henderson County Detention Center about at hour later, at 8:09 p.m., according to the HCDC website.
According to Kentucky Revised Statutes, first-degree strangulation is a Class C felony punishable for 5-10 years in prison.
Police said the investigation into the altercation that preceded the alleged strangulation is ongoing.
Jay Randolph was contacted by the Hendersonian. He declined to comment, citing his court case.
He is scheduled for arraignment at 10 a.m. Thursday.
