As the weather turns reliably nice for outdoor plantings, two popular local plant sales are coming up on the next two weekends.

First, the Henderson County High School FFA Plant Sale will be Saturday at the school greenhouse located behind the school on the west side of the building at 2424 Zion Road.

The sales opens at 8:30 a.m., but if you are looking for something in particular you might want to plan to arrive sooner rather than later as lines usually form before the greenhouse opens for business.

“Plant sales have been a huge part of HCHS agriculture program for multiple decades,” FFA President Lorelei Duncan. “Beyond just fundraising, the greenhouse provides invaluable hands-on experience for our students in the plant science and agri-business pathways.

“The hard work in the greenhouse for months is rewarded with hundreds of community members shopping at HCHS, which is something that will stick with our students for a lifetime,” she added.

Plants in the greenhouse awaiting new owners include:

  • Hanging baskets (flower combinations, Boston ferns, spider plants)
  • Perennials (coreopsis, hostas, dianthus)
  • Bedding plants (canna, dracaena, Kimberly Queen ferns, thunbergia)
  • Vegetables (bell pepper, sweet basil and Early Girl, Better Boy, Gold Medal and Artemis tomatoes)
  • Premium bedding plants (dahlia, euphorbia, calibrachoa, geranium, gomphrena, grass, lantana, osteospermum, petunias, salvia, sunflower, sunpatiens and verbena.
  • Standard bedding plants (ageratum, argranthemum, begonia, browallia, celosia, coleus, cuphea, evolvulus, impatiens, marigold, mecardonia, pentas, sedum, sweet potato vine and vinca.

Then on Derby Day, Saturday, May 4, the Henderson County Master Gardeners Association hosts its annual Spring Plant Sale at the Extension Expo Building on Zion Road.

The sale opens at 9 a.m. and there will be informational booths, including tool sharpening.

Extension Agent for Horticulture Andy Rideout said the master gardeners will be offering many unusual plant varieties that are not available in local commercial markets.

The sale will run through 3 p.m.
