Residents of Reed, Spottsville and Baskett may see workers installing new water meters at residences starting Monday.
The Henderson County Water District sent a release Tuesday announcing that new Neptune Mach 10 Ultrasonic customer water meters will be installed. HCWD said about 1/3 of the water district’s 6,500 residential meters will be replaced with this installation.
The work is a part of an overhaul of the HCWD’s leaky and old system. It began last summer after HCWD Superintendent Mark Julian requested $3 million from the Henderson County Fiscal Court for the massive project.
At the time, the fiscal court approved half of the $3 million and asked that Julian regularly report back to them about the repair work. If progress was shown, the fiscal court agreed it would allocate the second half of the $3 million. The fiscal court at its January 27 meeting were impressed with the work Julian and his staff have done so far and approved the next $1.5 million.
HCWD buys treated water from the Henderson Water Utility and then pipes it to its customers. In July 2024, the water district reported losing half of the water it bought before it could get to customers because of the leaky system. In October and November of 2025, however, the reported loss was at 22% and 26% respectively.
This installation is a continuation of the project. According to the HCWD release, the new meters use advanced ultrasonic technology, have no moving parts and provide extremely accurate water usage readings.
The release also it will be the first major meter replacement project in more than ten years for HCWD.
Over the past several months, HCWD personnel have been preparing for this project by marking meter locations and updating our Geographic Information System maps, which help staff locate meters more efficiently in the field, said the release.
Also, customers may briefly see interruptions in their water service while the new meter is being connected. Each service interruption is expected to last only a few minutes, and crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to minimize inconvenience, said the release.
There will not be a boil water advisory for these meter installations.
Both HCWD and Team AllDrive staff will be working in the area, and All Team AllDrive installers will be wearing identifiable uniforms clearly marked with their company name, said the release.
Additionally, all vehicles will be marked with AllDrive signs and all installers will have Class-3 safety apparel clearly marked with AllDrive logos and employee ID badges as well.
Approximately four installers will be onsite during the first week, with five to eight installers expected the following week. Installs will continue each day weather permitting until the job is completed, said the release.
Moving forward, HCWD is currently applying for funding to replace the other 2/3 of the customer meters. HCWD will announce when the next phase of the project occurs.
