The city of Henderson said Tuesday that it will begin discussions about plans of action for projects put together by groups in last year’s Inner City Improvement Plan.

The city’s public relations director said in a release Tuesday that the projects will be on the agenda for a March city commission meeting.

City staff will begin implementing projects after the city commission decides on the plan, said Holli Blanford, the city’s public relations director.

Throughout 2024, five committees met to discuss and then plan projects. Those committees dealt with Youth Enrichment and Engagement, Public Safety, Mental Wellness, Blight and Affordable Housing and Economic Development.

According to Blanford, 135 votes were cast. Voting occurred on the night of the presentations of the plans, which occurred Dec. 3 at Jefferson Elementary School gym. Additionally, residents could cast votes that same week at the John F. Kennedy Center and Audubon Kids Zone.

Here is a rundown of the projects, committee and total votes.

  • Blight Elimination and Property Acquisition Initiative, Blight and Affordable Housing: 95 votes
  • Domestic Violence Shelter, Public Safety: 72 votes
  • Job Readiness Training, Youth Enrichment and Engagement: 52
  • Letcher Street Business Corridor, Economic Development: 42
  • Mobile Resourcing (of mental health information), Mental Wellness: 33 votes
  • Career Exploration Fair, Youth Enrichment and Engagement: 23 votes
  • Domestic Violence Mobile Crisis Vehicle, Public Safety: 22 votes
  • Small Business Incentive Package, Economic Development: 20 votes
  • QPR Training, Mental Wellness: 12 votes
  • School Resources Program, Public Safety: 11 votes
  • Youth Athletic Training, Youth Enrichment and Engagement: 11 votes
  • Child Fatality Review, Public Safety: 6 votes
  • Inner City Economic Development Committee, Economic Development: 6 votes

Three other projects that didn’t receive votes include a Victim Checklist that was a plan from the Mental Wellness committee, a Social Media Campaign from the Mental Wellness group and Economic Vision Talks from the Economic Development Committee.

Also on Tuesday, the city announced the impact areas that committees will focus on during 2025’s ICIP group discussions and planning. Those will be Youth Enrichment and Engagement, Neighborhood Empowerment, Economic Development, Public Safety and Blight and Affordable Housing.

Each committee includes a representative from the city commission, local experts within the respective impact area, and residents/stakeholders who reside or have significant interest in the inner city, said the city’s release.

An orientation date has been set for 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 19 for those who have volunteered to serve on the committees. It will be at the Henderson Municipal Services Center located at 1449 Corporate Court.

Interested residents can sign up to volunteer on a committee by going to the city’s website at hendersonky.gov and visiting the Inner City Improvement Plan page, here.
