Henderson police say they have increased their presence in the construction zone on U.S. 41 in the past several days and issued dozens of warnings and citations.

HPD reports that officers have given 38 warnings and 65 speeding citations to motorists traveling through the work zone.

An HPD release said that the average speed for the speeding violations was 63 miles per hour. Four drivers were cited for traveling at 70 miles per hour or faster, said the release.

The speed limit in the construction zone is 45 miles per hour.

The most serious violation was a driver traveling at 75mph while workers were present, said the release. The driver was also cited for reckless driving.

One driver was arrested for DUI.

In addition to the moving violations, officers cited one driver for driving without a license, two drivers for having expired license plates and one driver for failing to properly secure their child in a car seat.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, over the last two years there have been over 2500 crashes in construction zones. Those crashes led to 24 deaths.

HPD is asking drivers to slow down so that workers and other motorists make it home safe.
