A day after members of the Henderson City Commission postponed a second reading of an ordinance regulating short-term rental properties so that it could conduct a public work session, Mayor Brad Staton said the work session will be moved to a later date.
He said that he and other city staff learned that the Kentucky General Assembly will look into short term rental properties in the upcoming session and that the city thought it best to wait until statewide legislature is passed before the city took up the issue.
At Tuesday’s Henderson City Commission meeting, commissioners decided to postpone a second reading of the regulate short-term rentals ordinance and instead set up a work session so that interested members of the community can share their thoughts.
It appeared like the commission was set to approve the amendments because all commissioners had voted for approval after a first reading at a previous meeting.
But after community members raised concerns about the new regulations on social media—some describing it as government overreach—the commission decided to pull back.
Staton told the Hendersonian that after the state legislature passes short-term rental regulations, the city will once again call a work session, as had been planned, and invite interested community members to discuss local regulations, if needed.
