The Clay Street bridge is once again open, according to a release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Repairs to the bridge were completed on schedule Friday, and the roadway has now been reopened to traffic, said the release.
The bridge was closed in early May after a routine bridge inspection found deterioration to the bridge supports.
KYTC engineers were able to design a repair project that allowed the bridge to be safely reopened to traffic until a project to fully replace the bridge can be completed, said the release.
Engineers encased the existing steel piers and concrete pilings under the bridge with a layer of concrete to form a new, sturdier support system, said the release.
KYTC officials said the new concrete piers will both support the bridge and prevent further deterioration to the old supports.
KYTC said the new work will allow the bridge to “resume operation indefinitely.”
The bridge replacement project will be advertised for construction bids later this year. Once a contractor is assigned to the project, a timeline for demolition and replacement will be announced.
Close to 6,000 vehicles travel Clay Street daily.
