A Henderson man who has been charged with murder pleaded not guilty at his Thursday arraignment.

Harold “JC” Farmer, 20, was charged Wednesday afternoon with murder in the shooting death of his grandfather, James Culver, 73, according to the Henderson Police Department.

According to court records, Farmer entered a not guilty plea Thursday and is being held on a $500,000 cash bond at the Henderson County Detention Center.

A public defender was appointed as his attorney, and a preliminary hearing was set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to court records.

On Jan. 21, HPD officers were dispatched to the residence in the 1100 block of Powell Street at 11:50 a.m. At the scene, officers found a “disturbance” in progress and found that Culver had “gunshot injuries,” according to an HPD release.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts performed by responding officers and emergency medical technicians, Culver was pronounced deceased at the scene, said the release.

Sgt. Bill Russell, HPD public information officer, said disturbance was a domestic violence incident but did not know what the disagreement was about.

After the initial investigation at the scene, four members of the family who were unharmed in the home were transported to HPD to determine what led to the shooting.

Later that afternoon, at 4:50 p.m., Farmer was arrested, Russell said.

Russell said Farmer and Culver as well as the other three family members all had lived together in the residence.

“We want to reassure the community that this was an isolated domestic incident,” said the HPD release. “There is no ongoing threat to the public related to this investigation.”
