Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center will feature community leaders and speakers who will share their stories, insights, and experiences with students and staff during February’s Black History Month, according to a news release from Henderson County Schools.
The featured events and speakers include:
- Anthony Black, South Heights Elementary School Principal – February 7
- Rohdene Rollins, Family and Consumer Science Extension Assistant, – February 12 at 8:45 a.m.
- Dr. Michelle Chappell, HCC CIT Program Coordinator & Associate Professor – February 15 at 8:30 a.m.
- Karen Arnett, Audubon Area Community Services Teacher Associate – February 19 at 9 a.m.
- Deborah Jackson-Hoda, President of NAACP of Henderson- February 19 at 8:15 a.m.
- Tamika Johnson, Kidz World Childcare Owner/ President – February 20 at 9 a.m.
- Danielle Anguish, Henderson County Public Library Children’s Services Manager – February 20 at 9 a.m.
- Dazmine Black, Family Advocate /Program Assistant Audubon Area Head Start February 21 at 8:15 a.m.
- February 22 – a special program to celebrate the birthday of local resident
Additionally, the preschool center will be sharing with students the history of Thelma B. Johnson, said the release.
Johnson was a retired Extension Home Economist. In 1978, she was elected to the school board and became the first Black citizen elected to public office in Henderson County. She served on the Henderson County Board of Education from 1978 to 1986 while also serving as chairwoman.
In 1984, she was awarded the Henderson-Henderson County Chamber of Commerce’s “Distinguished Citizen of the Year.”
The preschool center is named in her honor.
