Mike Skaggs, a Henderson County High School athletics hall of famer, is battling a highly aggressive form of brain cancer.
A friend of Skaggs’ reached out to the Hendersonian and said that a gofundme account has been set up to help Skaggs as he pursues personal treatment options including one that would call for him to travel to Europe.
According to the gofundme page, Skaggs was diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM), a WHO grade 4, highly aggressive form of brain cancer in June.
“His tumor is MGMT-promoter unmethylated, a characteristic associated with a poorer prognosis and a lower likelihood of benefit from temozolomide, a chemotherapy drug that is part of his standard treatment,” said the gofundme page.
A 1986 HCHS graduate, Skaggs was a two-sport standout—football and baseball—for the Colonels. He went on to play those same two sports at Vanderbilt University. He was a four-year letter winner for the Commodore baseball team, and he lettered for the football team in 1989.
