The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet fully reopened the Twin Bridges on Monday afternoon after completing temporary repairs to rocker bearings under the southbound bridge.
According to a KYTC official, three rocker bearings had shifted slightly under the left lane of the southbound bridge. Inspectors found that during an annual inspect of the Twin Bridges that began earlier this month.
On Monday, Aug. 17, KYTC closed the left lane of the southbound bridge until the temporary repair could be made. On that day and other days last week, motorists endured gridlock and long delays as they tried to make it south over the bridge.
At that time, officials began working to put a plan together for a temporary repair and soon a timeline was announced that it would be finished by the end of this week.
The KYTC said on Monday that the repairs began over the weekend, which led to the left lane on the southbound bridge being reopened at approximately 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24.
The just-finished fix to the rocker bearings is temporary, though. KYTC officials said a second project for permanent repairs is expected to begin—and be completed—by the end of the year.
That work, according to the KYTC, is expected to take “a matter of days” and much of the work is planned for overnight hours.
The public will be notified when work is scheduled to begin, said the KYTC.
