Henderson County seniors Ross Plummer and Christian Smith closed out their high school cross country careers with personal-best performances at the Class 3A state championships Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Plummer finished 110th in the 5K race with a time of 17:26.90, while Smith placed 126th in 17:37.89. Both improved significantly on their finishes from last year’s state meet, when Plummer took 165th and Smith finished 182nd.

The two were Henderson’s lone state competitors after the Colonels finished sixth at the Class 3A Region 1 meet on Oct. 24 at Trigg County High School. The boys placed fifth at regionals last season to advance to state as a team, but fell just short of repeating that accomplishment this fall, finishing 16 points behind fifth-place Owensboro.

Smith led Henderson at regionals with a 15th-place finish in 18:08.66, followed by Plummer in 23rd at 18:58.33 and senior Jordan Haynes in 31st at 19:34.31. Sophomore Kegan Cummings finished 38th in 19:50.06, while junior Cameron Anderson rounded out the Colonels’ five scoring runners in 39th at 19:59.90. Freshman Camden Bingham and sophomore Kaden Risley followed in 40th and 42nd, respectively.

The girls finished ninth at regionals with six runners after having only two finish the regional meet a year ago. Sophomore Sophi Gonzalez led Henderson with a 30th-place finish in 24:46.38, followed by freshman Grace Lawson in 42nd at 26:54.57 and senior Hazel Erbst in 47th at 27:59.15.

Freshman Kendall Edds took 50th, followed by sophomore Marianna Stallings in 52nd and senior Sophia Wright in 53rd. Gonzalez’s performance marked a strong return after a stress fracture ended her season early last year.

Despite falling short of their postseason team goals, both programs showed improvement throughout the regular season under second-year head coach Katie Johnson.

Henderson opened its season Aug. 18 in Owensboro, but extreme heat and thunderstorms kept the Colonels from competing again until Sept. 12. The team’s progress became especially evident at the Marshall County Invitational in late September, where nearly every runner recorded a personal-best time.

Smith, Plummer and Anderson each broke the 19-minute mark, while several other Colonels finished near or below 20 minutes.

“When I saw three of them come through in under 19 minutes, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,'” Johnson said. “That’s when I could really see that all of their hard work was paying off.”

The Colonels followed with another strong showing at the Louisville XC Classic, where runners continued posting personal and season-best times. Amid the unusually hot weather, Henderson also moved its practices to 5:45 a.m., a schedule the runners continued throughout much of September and October.

The team’s commitment extended beyond early-morning workouts, with runners regularly organizing dinners and other activities outside of practice. Those relationships helped create a close-knit atmosphere that became one of the program’s biggest takeaways from the season.

“When I asked the kids what their favorite part of the season was, it was unanimously the sense of family that we built,” Johnson said.

That emphasis on enjoying the sport was something Johnson stressed before the season, with hopes of continuing to attract more athletes to both programs.

Looking ahead, Henderson will lose three seniors from its boys’ regional lineup in Smith, Plummer and Haynes, but nine runners are expected to return next fall. Among them are Anderson and Cummings, who emerged as key contributors this season.

On the girls’ side, Henderson will graduate Erbst and Wright but return four runners: Gonzalez, Lawson, Edds, and Stallings. The program will look to continue adding runners while building on the improvements made this fall.

For now, attention turns to the upcoming track season, where several of Henderson’s returning distance runners will look to carry their cross country success into the spring.
