The American Red Cross is set up in the gym of the Salvation Army to assist with disaster assistance sign-ups.

Red Cross volunteers are scheduled to be at the Salvation Army at 1213 Washington St. until 5 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Thursday.

As of about 11:30 a.m. Monday, a handful of residents had come to sign up, said Charles Haupt, the coordinator for Zone 3, which covers the western part of the state.

James Beckley, who lives in Niagara on the Green River, signed up Monday morning. He said the staff was helpful, kind, knowledgeable and friendly.

Beckley said his house sits about 35 yards from the river and the bottom floor of it suffered “quite a lot” of damage. Among the damages on his property are a furnace, a generator, the home’s water system, furniture on the ground floor, a collapsed well and more. He said the damages were well into the “thousands of dollars.”

Haupt, from Owego, N.Y., said the Red Cross so far has assessed 43 properties in the county as major disasters or destroyed.

Another Red Cross volunteer, Brayden Foxhoven, said the Red Cross works hand-in-hand with other organizations that assist disaster survivors. He said that those affected by flooding should sign up with the Red Cross, as well as the United Way and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Residents can also sign up for assistance at Get Help | Emergency Preparedness | Red Cross.
