Meryl Grogan | Golf | Co-Athlete of the Month for August
Throughout August, Grogan provided steady leadership for the Henderson County girls golf team with her consistent scoring. The junior Lady Colonel had one sixth-place finish to go with four top-four finishes, including winning the Christian County Invitational by 10 shots. In that tournament, Grogan posted an extraordinary, eight-under score of 64, which is thought to be a school record. She routinely posted scores in the mid-70s during her August tournaments.
Coach Payton Knight on Grogan: “Meryl had a round of golf that truly comes around once in a lifetime for most…She was making every putt she walked up to. She was hitting the ball exactly how and where she wanted to…It’s nice to be able to count on her to have a round in the mid-70s, but I hope she knows she can take it so much further.”
Alex Bowley | Soccer | Co-Athlete of the Month for August
Bowley supplied the offensive firepower for the Henderson County boys soccer team during an up-and-down August. Through eight games, in which the Colonels were 4-4, the senior scored in six of them. He collected 13 total goals and an assist, including a hat trick in the season opener versus Apollo and an astonishing five goals against Caldwell County. According to KHSAA statistics, he leads all goal scorers in the second region.
Head Coach Benson Pryor on his senior leader: “He is crafty and is good with the ball at his feet. He is faster now than he was last year. He works extremely hard and doesn’t give up on a lot of balls. He doesn’t give up on a lot of plays, which makes him a dangerous striker. Everything’s always in play with him until he just can’t get to it. I think that’s really helped him out a lot.”
