Colonels force five interceptions, score 26 unanswered second-half points to advance to second round
Henderson County turned a narrow halftime lead into a commanding victory Friday night, shutting out Meade County in the second half to earn a 39-7 win in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs.
“You’re on the road, you’re playing a higher seed, and it was like Yogi Berra said, déjà vu all over again,” Henderson County head coach John Elliott said. “It was a battle the first half, and I thought the second half our kids raised their play a notch, especially defensively.”
Henderson opened the game with an aggressive onside kick, but Meade County recovered and capitalized with a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Jolly to Jaydin Harris.
The Green Wave’s 7-0 advantage held until late in the first quarter, when senior running back Jack Dalton broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Henderson trailing 7-6.
Dalton added a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give Henderson its first lead, 13-7, with 4:27 remaining before halftime.
Meade threatened to answer just before the break when a 56-yard completion moved the Green Wave inside Henderson’s 15-yard line. However, Brody Belt intercepted Jolly in the end zone to preserve the Colonels’ six-point advantage.
Henderson came out firing in the second half, led by Dalton’s explosive 57-yard kickoff return.
A 20-yard completion to sophomore Jackson Loveless helped set up Dalton’s third touchdown of the night, a 2-yard run that extended Henderson’s lead to 19-7.
The Colonels’ defense followed with another stop, highlighted by Drake Davis-Chapman’s second sack of the night, before Belt connected with Hezekiah Harris for a 13-yard touchdown to push the advantage to 26-7.
Harris then intercepted Jolly near Henderson’s goal line, setting up one of the Colonels’ most impressive possessions of the night.
Starting at their own 3-yard line, Henderson marched 97 yards in 10 plays, highlighted by a 21-yard Dalton run and a 33-yard reception from Harris. Belt capped the drive with a 33-yard touchdown run, giving the Colonels a 33-7 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Elliott said the difference came when his players began to feed off one another’s energy early in the second half.
“There were a couple plays there at the start of the second half where all of a sudden our kids got into it, and on the sideline, and they were yelling more, and their kids on the field were yelling more,” Elliott said. “We just picked the play up.”
That increased intensity was especially evident defensively, where Henderson contained a Meade County rushing attack featuring several unique formations and backfield looks under head coach Blake Powers, a former running backs coach at Army West Point.
After surrendering 321 rushing yards to Owensboro in its regular-season finale, Henderson held the Green Wave to just 27 yards on 30 carries Friday.
Sophomore Luke Mann continued to make his presence felt in the middle of Henderson’s defense, recording seven tackles. Mann has emerged as a key contributor for the Colonels in recent weeks.
Christian Haygan finished with six tackles, including four for loss, consistently disrupting Meade County’s rushing attack. Jace Duncan added five tackles and a forced fumble, while Drake Davis-Chapman recorded two huge sacks.
Davis-Chapman said Meade County’s offensive approach differed from what the Colonels had anticipated.
“Really, we were expecting a lot of run,” Davis-Chapman said. “They passed way more than we thought, and obviously, the pass didn’t work out as soon as we switched up our defense.”
Henderson intercepted five passes on the night, with Jaxton Duncan, Dalton, Belt, Harris, and Spencer Kellen each recording a takeaway.
The defensive pressure continued into the fourth quarter, when Kellen’s interception set up Belt’s second rushing touchdown, a 2-yard run that completed the scoring.
“We made a couple changes with personnel defensively,” Elliott said. “We found a rhythm on the defensive side in the second half. We made the same call for the last quarter and a half. We never changed. It was working, and we just stayed with it.”
Dalton finished with 163 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, providing several explosive plays that helped Henderson pull away.
Belt added 77 rushing yards and two scores on eight attempts while completing 10 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown.
Loveless led Henderson’s receivers with three catches for 55 yards, bringing his season total close to 800. Harris added 47 yards on two receptions, followed by Christian Haygan with 36.
The Colonels finished with 423 yards of total offense, including 271 on the ground, while holding Meade County to 230 total yards.
With the win, Henderson is on a remarkably familiar postseason path.
Last season, the Colonels closed the regular season with losses to McCracken County (55-42) and Owensboro (65-3) before traveling to Brandenburg and defeating Meade County 42-7 in the first round of the playoffs.
This year, Henderson followed nearly the same script, falling to McCracken County 49-35 and Owensboro 50-2 before returning to Meade County and leaving with a 39-7 victory.
A year ago, the Colonels followed their opening-round win by upsetting McCracken County 41-34, avenging their regular-season defeat to the Mustangs.
Now, with the opening round of last year’s postseason run nearly replicated, Henderson will look to repeat the next chapter when it travels to Paducah on Friday.
For Dalton, the rivalry has made McCracken County something of “a home away from home,” with Friday’s contest marking the Colonels’ third consecutive trip to Paducah to face the Mustangs, dating back to last year’s second-round playoff victory.
Elliott, who previously coached McCracken County head coach Tyler Brooks and coached alongside defensive coordinator Jacob Dowdy at Henderson, knows the challenge that awaits.
“We know the route,” Elliott said. “It’ll be a fun week of practice. Our kids are excited about the opportunity to play them again.”
The Colonels and Mustangs are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at McCracken County High School.
