Redbanks recognized in state awards

Redbanks was recognized as a top long-term care facility in the state by the Kentucky Coalition for Aging Resources and Empowerment at its quality awards banquet 2025 Best of Kentucky-Nursing and Rehabilitation award.

The Best of Kentucky – Nursing and Rehabilitation honorees must possess a CMS star rating of four or higher to apply.

“At Redbanks it is our mission to seek to provide quality of care and services, while striving daily to uphold an individual’s dignity, freedom of choice, and the independence needed to maintain the highest practicable lifestyle,” said Redbanks Executive Director Shari Newton. “We are honored to be recognized, and we are grateful to be part of such a wonderful community.”

Long-term care and assisted living providers from across the state attended the Annual Meeting & Expo in Louisville Nov. 18-20. Participants furthered their knowledge of senior care with a variety of educational options including strategies to cope with stress on the job, hiring and retaining quality staff and regulatory issues. More than 100 vendors exhibited during the expo, showcasing the latest innovations to provide quality care.

Shappell named new math coordinator for school system

Brooke Shappell has been named the new District Math Coordinator for Henderson County Schools.

Shappell is a graduate of the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She also holds a Rank I in Educational Administration from Murray State University, said an HCS release.

Shappell began her career with Henderson County Schools in 2006. She has served as a teacher at Cairo Elementary, a curriculum specialist, and principal at both A.B. Chandler Elementary and Cairo Elementary Schools. Under her leadership, Cairo Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School. She is currently serving as an Interventionist at Henderson County High School.

Shappell shared that “it is an honor to have the opportunity to continue to serve the students, staff, and families of Henderson County Schools in this new role as District Math Coordinator. I am excited to be a part of the continued success of our amazing school district.”

In this position, Shappell will help lead and strengthen the district’s overall Math program by supporting the implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards, modeling effective instructional practices, and working closely with teachers to identify student learning needs. She will also guide curriculum improvements and provide coaching and professional learning to ensure high-quality Math instruction across the district.

“Brooke Shappell is an exceptional instructional leader whose dedication to students and teachers is evident in every role she has held,” said HCS Superintendent Bob Lawson. “Her experience, passion for learning, and commitment to excellence make her the ideal person to lead our district’s Math initiatives. We are excited to welcome her into this new leadership role.”

Shappell will officially begin her duties as District Math Coordinator on July 1, following the retirement of current District Math Coordinator Beth Roberts.

Matthew 25 AIDS Services will host its annual World AIDS Day Resource Fair from 1-4 p.m. Monday at the Recovery Resource Club of Henderson at 437 First St.

As part of Matthew 25’s commitment to improving community health, free HIV testing will be offered onsite. Walk-ins are welcome, and testing is confidential, quick, and accessible to all with results in 60 seconds, said the release.

“World AIDS Day is a time for reflection, unity, and action,” said Rachel Trout, public relations and fundraising specialist at Matthew 25.

“We are grateful to stand alongside our community partners to ensure our region has the knowledge, tools, and support needed to thrive,” Trout said. “Together, we can continue making progress in the fight against HIV.”

This year’s Resource Fair will feature a wide range of vendors offering information, support, and services related to healthcare, recovery, education, and community engagement. Participating organizations include:
