The Henderson Police Department posted recently about a new law that requires drivers to stop for a school or church bus that is displaying its stop arm and flashing red lights from either direction on all roads.
It went into effect on July 15.
Local K-12 school starts on Thursday.
According to the post, if there is no physical barrier or unpaved median, you must stop—even on a four-lane road.
There is an exception to be aware of. Drivers traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with four or more lanes that is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median, do not have to stop.
Another point of clarification, if driving on a four-lane highway with a paved center turn lane, a driver must stop, said the post.
The post also says that if a driver illegally passes a stopped school bus and cannot be identified, Kentucky law now presumes the registered owner or lessee was driving and subjects them to the penalties provided by law unless that presumption is rebutted.
