Henderson scores 42 points on just 23 offensive plays as key players return from injury
Henderson County made sure there was plenty to celebrate on Homecoming night.
The Colonels scored on special teams before their offense ever touched the field and never looked back, cruising past Central Hardin 42-0 Friday night at Colonel Stadium for their second straight victory.
The win moves Henderson County to 3-3 at the midway point of the season after the Colonels opened the year 1-3. It also marked their second consecutive dominant defensive performance after holding Daviess County to three points a week ago.
“It’s always nice to get a Homecoming win,” Henderson County head coach John Elliott said. “We had a big crowd tonight. Homecoming at Henderson County High School is a big to-do. It’s been a week-long celebration, and we were able to get a big victory tonight for the kids and for the town.”
Henderson needed just 23 offensive plays to put 42 points on the board, finishing with 239 total yards, 179 rushing and 60 passing. The Colonels averaged more than 10 yards per offensive snap while the defense and special teams repeatedly put the offense in favorable situations.
Central Hardin’s opening possession stalled near midfield before a snap sailed over the Bruins’ punter. Christian Haygan beat the punter to the loose ball, scooped it up and raced into the end zone for the game’s first touchdown.
“That kind of got us rolling there early,” Elliott said. “We were explosive early on.”
Jack Dalton, returning after missing three games with a concussion, quickly made his presence felt as well.
After returning a punt to midfield, Dalton took Henderson’s first offensive snap 50 yards for a touchdown. The senior broke through the second level and raced toward the left pylon for the score.
Central Hardin went three-and-out on its ensuing possession, and Dalton again gave the Colonels excellent field position with a 20-yard punt return to the Bruins’ 30.
On Henderson’s next offensive snap, Belt found Hezekiah Harris on a bubble screen to the right side, and Harris took it 30 yards for a touchdown. Henderson had scored touchdowns on its first two offensive plays and led 21-0 with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter.
Dalton scored again early in the second, this time from three yards out, giving him two touchdowns on his first two carries since returning. He finished with 53 yards on those two attempts.
“Missing nearly a month is obviously not what I really wanted to do,” Dalton said. “I’m just looking to help the team out wherever I can and help our rushing attack. It’s improved in the past couple of weeks, and I hope to keep that going.”
Kingston Shidler added Henderson’s fifth touchdown with 8:23 remaining in the half, bursting up the middle for a 40-yard score.
Shidler led the Colonels on the ground with 79 yards and a touchdown on only four carries. Belt added 38 yards on three attempts, while Jackson Loveless rushed for 10.
The Bruins put together their best drive of the first half late in the second quarter, using their interior rushing attack and a wishbone look to move into Henderson territory. But on fourth-and-one, Haygan came off the edge and dropped the quarterback 13 yards behind the line of scrimmage to end the threat.
“Our defense has definitely progressed,” Haygan said. “In the beginning of the season, we were inexperienced in places, but now we’re on a roll. As long as we keep executing in practice and staying locked in, I think we’re going to continue on that roll.”
That defense received a boost Friday with the returns of Dalton, Jake Hall and Kace Smith from injury. Hall led Henderson with eight tackles, followed by Parker Shappell with five, while Spencer Kellen and Drake Chapman each recorded four.
Sophomore Jaden Williams also made his mark late in the fourth quarter, forcing and recovering a fumble to halt Central Hardin’s deepest drive of the night.
Central Hardin finished with 121 total yards, including 109 on the ground, and turned the ball over twice. The Bruins entered the night winless and had yet to score this season after facing a schedule that included tough Louisville-area teams. Henderson also defeated Central Hardin 44-12 last season.
“They’re all three key cogs on the defensive side of the football,” Elliott said of Dalton, Hall and Smith. “Having those three guys back made a big difference tonight. All three of them had big tackles, made big plays, and it was nice to see them back in there.”
Henderson’s first possession of the second half lasted just three plays before the Colonels added their final score early in the fourth quarter.
Belt found Shidler in the flat for a three-yard touchdown with 11:35 remaining, pushing the lead to 42-0.
Belt finished 5-of-8 passing for 49 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 38 yards. Backup Paxden Beck completed 1-of-3 passes for 11 yards. Harris caught two passes for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Haygan added a 15-yard reception and Luke Mann caught an 11-yard pass.
The shutout was Henderson County’s first of the season and continued a sharp defensive turnaround. After allowing 128 points over the first three games, the Colonels have surrendered only three over the last two.
Now back at .500, Henderson will remain home next Friday to host George Rogers Clark at 7 p.m. The Colonels fell to the Cardinals 34-14 on the road last season.
“GRC is a good team,” Dalton said. “We have to keep our secondary down, work on our coverage drops. That’s a big point of emphasis in practice. And then the run game, just having our assignments down up front and hitting the right gaps.”
