Water Street closure for prep work on train bridge is not connected to painting
Henderson Assistant City Manager Buzzy Newman said the closure on Water Street Wednesday and Thursday so that CSX can do prep work is not connected to the city’s deal to paint the bridge spanning the road.
Late last Friday evening, the city posted an announcement that Water Street would be closed from Third Street to Fifth Street.
It read: “The City was just informed that CSX Transportation will be blocking Water Street from 3rd Street to 5th Street on February 25th and 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day.
The closure is necessary for prep work on the railroad overpass.”
Newman said he didn’t know what the prep work was for but assumed it was for maintenance.
Last summer, the city struck a deal with Pittsburg Tank & Tower Group to paint that span of bridge. The city is planning to trade a 2.29 acre of parcel of land abutting the city’s former Public Works Building valued at $30,000 to PTTG and in return PTTG will paint the CSX bridge section that spans over Water Street. That job’s cost is estimated at $92,000, so the city will also pay $62,000 to make up the difference.
Newman said the permit application to complete that job has not been finished, which he added is a process.
“It’s not simple,” he said. “We’re hoping to get approved to paint by this summer.”

City’s spring cleanup dates are March 23 and April 20
The city of Henderson’s spring cleanup will be held in two phases, starting on March 23 and April 20.
Here’s the rundown from the city of Henderson:
Phase 1: Residents south of Second Street should have their items out by 7 a.m. on Monday, March 23.
Phase 2: Residents north of Second Street should have their items out by 7 a.m. on Monday, April 20.
Crews will be canvassing the city, and while they aim to collect all items as quickly as possible, please be patient if your debris isn’t picked up immediately. Once an area is collected, crews will not return, so make sure your items are out on time.
Large items such as tree limbs, broken furniture, and yard debris (including brush and limbs) will be picked up at no charge.
A maximum of one small pickup truck-sized load of general household debris and one small pickup truck-sized load of yard debris will be accepted per household.
But city workers will not pick up tires, batteries, oil, paint, air conditioners, refrigerators, and other hazardous items.
Other Guidelines:
- Separation is key: Please keep household trash and yard debris separate. Mixing them could result in the entire load being sent to the landfill, which comes at a higher cost to taxpayers.
- Placement: Debris should be placed on the ground (not on a trailer) near your regular trash collection area, but away from structures like fences, poles, and fire hydrants to ensure easy access for pickup.
- No need to call: Crews will automatically cover every street and alley in the city. Just make sure your items are ready by the appropriate date, and be patient as crews work through the area.
- Missed the deadline?: If you miss the scheduled pickup time or have more than the allowed amount, you can arrange a special pickup for a fee by calling Public Works at 270-831-1234.
Landfill option: Residents can always dispose of items directly at the landfill, open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This cleanup event is for residential properties only, and not for vacant lots, commercial use, or construction/demolition debris.
“By following these simple guidelines, we can ensure the cleanup is fast and efficient,” offered City Public Works Director Brian Williams. “We appreciate your cooperation in making this event a success.”
The city asks residents who have questions about their collection to contact Public Works at 270-831-1234.
