The Henderson Lions are giving back more than $80,000 dollars to the community this summer.
Throughout July, the Lions will hand out more than $50,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations at two of their weekly club meetings in July. The first round of grant funding was given at Tuesday, July 14’s meeting. The next round of check presentations will occur at the July 28 meeting.
Earlier in the summer, the Lions awarded $19,500 in scholarships to recent high school graduates. There is also money dedicated to vision care that the Lions steward and money put aside in reserves for further community assistance, said Lions media representative Myrle Partridge.

The Lions raised the grant money through its annual community activities: the annual live one night auction, sale of lemon shakeups at the Tri-Fest, an annual golf scramble and the Lions Arts and Crafts Festival at Audubon State Park.
The Lions hold their meetings from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the community room in the Henderson County Public Library.
Dust Bowl champions
Henderson’s Dust Bowl wrapped up Saturday night. The basketball tournament each summer is put on by Henderson’s Black History Committee and is hosted at the John F. Kennedy Center for a week each July.
In the middle school championship Pimp G’z defeated Braves 75-45.

In the high school championship, the Ghetto Geeks, featuring some Henderson County High School players, defeated Pauley Elite 62-50.

In the men’s championship, Evansville’s Hood Hoops defeated All Dawgs 64-63.
