Dr. Michelle Chappell and Shannon Sandefur were recently named as two of the Junior League of Evansville’s Top 20 Female Leaders in the tri-state.

Both said they were surprised by the news.

“I didn’t know I was going to be nominated,” Chappell said.

“I think I’m still living in shock,” Sandefur said. “It’s a huge honor.”

Both women stay busy, evidenced by their resumes.

Chappell’s activities include:

  • Coordinator of the Computer and Information Technologies program at Henderson Community College
  • Chair of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce’s Education, Workforce, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
  • Owner of Chappell Consulting, which assists businesses with mentoring and belonging
  • Co-chair of Juneteenth Committee
  • Founder and facilitator of the Transition to Beyond program which offers training and sessions for underrepresented minority students to Henderson County High School to help them transition to postsecondary education
  • Graduate of Henderson Leadership Initiative

Sandefur’s list includes:

  • Executive director of the Henderson County Public Library
  • Rotary Club member
  • Secretary for the Rotary Board
  • Board member for the Ohio Valley Art League
  • Member of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce’s Education, Workforce, and  Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
  • Chair for the Kentucky Public Library Association’s continuing education committee
  • Member of KPLA’s annual conference planning committee
  • Graduate of Henderson Leadership Initiative

Sandefur said she’s been very blessed since she took over at the library.

“I’m just so thankful that the library board took a chance on me three years ago,” she said. “It has brought so many blessings to my life.”

Chappell said friends ask her if she’s involved in everything. Her answer: “To be honest, yes.”

“I just like helping people,” Chappell said. “Just being that soundboard and guidance.”

According to its website, the Junior League of Evansville is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
