HCHS students outperform the world
Henderson County High School students outperformed state, national and global averages for SAT testing, said a release from the Henderson County Schools system.
This was the first year that Kentucky transitioned from the ACT to the SAT as the statewide assessment for juniors, and HCHS students scored 78 points higher than the state average in total score, said the release.
HCHS students’ scores were 25 points higher in Reading and Writing and 52 points higher in Math, said the release.
Additionally, HCHS exceeded the state average by 15% in the number of students meeting both college readiness benchmarks.
Among HCHS juniors, 58% met the college readiness benchmark in Reading and Writing, while 35% met the benchmark in Math.
The release said HCHS remained committed to the practices that support student success while many schools shifted their approach following the state transition to the SAT.
The district also continued to offer the ACT to students who wished to take it, recognizing its familiarity and value for many students and families.
School leaders noted that the scores represent more than strong testing performance; they reflect the ongoing commitment to preparing students for college, careers and all post-secondary opportunities after graduation.
Highlights include:
- 78 points higher than the state average for total score
- 25 points higher than the state average for reading and writing
- 52 points higher than the state average for math
- 15% more students met BOTH college readiness than the average of all state schools
- 58% of juniors at HCHS met the college readiness benchmark for reading and writing
- 35% of juniors at HCHS met the college readiness benchmark for math
HPD and HCSO recover stolen vehicle
The Henderson Police Department and Henderson County Sheriff’s Office recovered a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Wright Street sometime overnight between July 6 and July 7.
Authorities recovered it on July 7.
According to an HPD Facebook post, the department used Flock camera technology, and learned that the stolen vehicle traveled north out of Henderson during the overnight hours, and was located by the same camera system traveling back into Henderson the following morning.
Officers attempted a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle, but the vehicle fled, said the release.
The vehicle crashed a short time later, and both occupants fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, both suspects were taken into custody. Property belonging to the stolen vehicle was recovered from both individuals.
Steven Robinson, 24, and Gerald Winters, 18, were arrested and lodged at the Henderson County Detention Center on the following charges:
- Receiving stolen property ($10,000 or more)
- First-degree fleeing or evading police
- Second-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot)
- Leaving the scene of an accident—failure to render aid or assistance
HMP&L work continues on Sand Lane
Henderson Municipal Power & Light will finish up replacing power poles this week in phase 2 of a project that has been going on all summer, according to an HMP&L release.
Also, starting Monday, workers will begin to replace poles at the intersection of Green Street and Sand Lane.
Motorists may encounter work zone traffic measures with the one lane of traffic in place in portions of the roadway, said a release from HMP&L. HMP&L advises motorists to obey traffic control flagmen and be cautious when driving through the work zone.
HCPL and Chamber team up for unique window display
The Henderson County Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge is coming to a close but not without one last hurrah.
HCPL has partnered with the Henderson Chamber of Commerce to help participants finish their last 20 minutes of the HCPL Summer Reading Challenge in style.
HCPL said that on Friday from 3-5 p.m., a select few children will read for 20 minutes in the Chamber’s front display window, which has been transformed into a land before time, complete with a giant dinosaur, in keeping with the library’s Unearth a Story Summer Reading Challenge theme.
