A section of U.S. 60 in western Daviess County between Henderson and Owensboro will be closed for as long as 90 days starting next Tuesday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced Monday.
Crews had been working for about a month to replace a 76-year-old bridge on U.S. 60 over Katie Meadow Slough about one mile east of Stanley. That had required limiting traffic to one lane, with alternating flow controlled by temporary traffic signals.
But now crews have discovered a previously unknown buried foundation from a structure predating the current bridge, which was constructed in 1950.
While the original plan was to replace the bridge one side at a time, the discovery of the old structure is requiring the closure of the entire bridge for up to 90 days. KYTC said the closure will begin Tuesday, June 16.
KYTC said there will be a marked detour, utilizing Kentucky 1554 and the Audubon Parkway, for the duration of the closure.
That detour will add about five miles to the normal trip from Henderson to Owensboro using U.S. 60, so motorists might want to instead make the entire trip via the Audubon Parkway.
The bridge being replaced carries an average of 2,646 vehicles per day.
