Local student collects 70 pounds of supplies for hurricane victims

North Middle School student Haynie Smith spent time last week going door-to-door in her Arlington neighborhood to collect supplies for Hurricane Helene victims.

Her father, Rob, said his 12-year-old daughter ended up collecting about 70 pounds of wet wipes, can goods and blankets to donate to the relief effort HCKY Helene.

The HCKY Helene effort is accepting community donations at 232 Heilman Ave., Door D2.

Risley wins Woman of the Year award

Whitney Risley, who is the director of existing industry and workforce development for Henderson Economic Development, was awarded the Linda E. White Woman of the Year award Thursday night.

The award was a part of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce’s Women In Business award ceremony. The theme of the night was “Making Herstory” and was held at the Farmer and Frenchman.

One of Risley’s recent accomplishments was working with Hydro Aluminum in that company’s expansion. The $85 million investment includes adding 31 new jobs, according to a past article.

An HED Facebook post said, “Whitney’s dedication, commitment, and behind-the-scenes efforts have had a tremendous impact on our community. She has quietly, yet powerfully, made significant contributions to Henderson, and while she often works without fanfare, her results speak for themselves!”

Henderson Denny’s has closed

The Denny’s restaurant on the U.S. 41-Strip has closed.

Wednesday reports on social media that the restaurant had closed were confirmed Thursday by city of Henderson officials, though they said that they’ve not been contacted by any Denny’s representatives.

A Facebook page for Denny’s (1956 US Hwy 41 N, Henderson, Ky) has in its description “Permanently closed.”

Both Henderson Mayor Brad Staton and City Manager Buzzy Newman said they are unaware of other restaurants that may want to move into the building.
