Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear has parted ways with his long-time communications director.

Crystal Staley, the former spokesperson for the governor’s office, has been succeeded by Scottie Ellis, the governor’s office confirmed Tuesday.

“Crystal Staley has been a crucial part of Team Kentucky for years, serving during my time as Attorney General and Governor,” Beshear said in a statement to the Kentucky Lantern. “Through unprecedented challenges and historic wins, Crystal was always there to ensure the people of Kentucky were updated and informed. I am grateful to her for her years of service, and wish her the best of luck in this next chapter.”

Staley was director of communications for the governor’s office since Beshear was inaugurated in 2019, according to her LinkedIn profile. Before that, she was director of communications for Beshear’s Attorney General office.

Staley thanked Beshear “for the opportunity to serve the people of Kentucky,” according to a statement from her shared by the governor’s office.

“I am grateful for the relationships I’ve built and the support I’ve received from so many people over the years,” Staley said.

Ellis was the director of digital and creative services for the governor’s office. Last year, she briefly worked as the director of communications for Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg after working as deputy communications director for Beshear’s office.

James Hatchett, former deputy communications director for Beshear’s office, has been named director of digital and creative services

According to press releases issued by the governor’s office, Staley was listed as a media contact as of Friday.
