High Point coach will speak at Great Futures dinner

The Boys & Girls Club of Henderson will welcome High Point University basketball coach Flynn Clayman on Aug. 27 as featured speaker of its third annual Great Futures Dinner.

The Great Futures Dinner is one of several fundraisers the local Boys & Girls Club puts on each year to fund both the summer all-day programs and the school year after-school program offered at the club, said Emily Hudson,

The programs have low fees so that many children can take part. The club is currently taking applications for students that want to participate in the afterschool program, which has a cost of $25 for the entire year, Hudson said.

At the dinner, Clayman will relay stories about his journey as a coach. Hudson said there will be a touch of inspiration to the speech.

In the 2025-2026 season—his first full season as a head coac—Clayman led High Point to a 31-5 record and an NCAA Tournament berth out of the Big South conference. He was named the conference’s co-coach of the year. He was named the 2026 Red Auerbach Coach of the Year and  was voted a finalist for the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year, given to the top first-time head coaches in college basketball, according to his bio on the High Point University men’s basketball page.

Hudson said some students who are members of the club will attend the event, and some staff members will also speak about the club’s impact.

Hudson said the tables for the dinner are sold out. Those who still want to donate, however, can go to www.cliffhaganboysandgirlsclub.org, click on the orange ‘Donate’ button and then scroll down to click on Henderson. That will lead you to the donation portal.

Audubon State Park hosts ‘Monarch Mysteries’ in September

Fall is coming, and in September John James Audubon State Park will host events on two consecutive Saturdays focusing on the Monarch butterfly.

“Monarch Mysteries,” a day of programming about this endangered species and its two-migration, will take place on Sept. 5 and again on Sept. 12 from 8-11:30 a.m.

In this “citizen science” program, participants will learn the Monarch’s incredible story then caravan to Sloughs Wildlife Management Area to capture, tag and release these creatures back to the wild.

Tags and butterfly nets are provided and naturalists will instruct participants on how to complete the tagging.

It is recommended that participants wear long pants and sturdy shoes.

The program meets at Audubon Museum. The program fee is $5, but children age 4 and younger can attend for free. Friends of Audubon members receive a discount, and larger families can receive a group rate.

For information, contact Naturalist Lisa Hoffman at (502) 782-9727 or email Lisa.Hoffman@ky.gov.

On Sunday, Sept. 6, a “Making Monarchs” craft event will be offered from 2-4 p.m. at Audubon Museum. The program cost varies by the type of craft that is selected.

Earle C. Clements Job Corps will stay open

The U.S. Department of Labor has agreed to reverse its May 2025 decision that would have stopped operations at 99 Job Corps centers, including the Earle C. Clements Job Corps in Morganfield.

A release from the Job Corps said that it isopen, enrolling, and ready to help students prepare for successful careers.

“This is great news and a great time for young people to take a closer look at everything Job Corps has to offer,” said Jeff Barton, senior vice president overseeing Job Corps operations for Management & Training Corporation (MTC), which operates the center, in a prepared statement. “We want to fill every available seat so more young people can gain the skills, support and confidence they need to launch successful careers.”

Earle C. Clements Job Corps Academy offers hands-on career training in a variety of industries, including automotive and machine repair, hospitality, transportation, renewable resources and energy, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, information technology, construction, and finance and business, said the release.

A list of available programs can be found here. These programs prepare students for careers in high-demand industries that need trained, skilled workers.

Students can also earn a high school diploma or equivalent, strengthen their workplace skills, and prepare for employment, an apprenticeship, higher education, or military service. For eligible students, Job Corps is free and includes housing, meals, basic medical care and training supplies.

“If you’re between 16 and 24 and wondering what comes next, Job Corps could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for,” Barton said. “Whether you want to finish high school, learn a trade, or begin a career with strong earning potential, we have openings now and people ready to help you get started.”

People can learn more or begin the application process here or by calling 800-733-JOBS (5627).
