Farmer’s Market opens Saturday
The first Saturday in May is famously known as the day for a big thoroughbred horse race that takes place in Louisville, Kentucky, but in Henderson County there’s additional excitement.
It’s opening day for the Henderson Farmers Market, which means the beginning of a season of “eating local.”
Growers and producers of items available in the early season will be set up from 8 a.m. to noon (as long as supplies last) starting on Saturday, May 4.
The market runs from May through October on Tuesday, Fridays and Saturday and includes local and fresh produce, honey, wine, meat, bakery goods and more.
Early in the season shoppers are likely to find a variety of lettuces and greens, asparagus, green onions, farm-raised eggs, plant starts, fresh herbs, jams, jellies, preserves and honey, among other things.
As the growing season advances, the variety of items and number of producers at the market grows, too.
The market location is the Cates-Porter Farmers Market Pavilion at Henderson County Fairgrounds located on Sam Ball Way at Airline Road.
Follow the Henderson Farmers Market Facebook page for updates about what’s available at the market and for news about special activities that take place on select Saturdays during market season.
County schools begin testing Thursday
Henderson County Schools students will begin year-end testing Thursday.
The Kentucky Summative Assessment, given to public school students in grades 3-8, grade 10 and grade 11, will continue until May 22, according to a release from the school system.
KSA provides content area assessments include reading, math, science, social studies, writing, and editing and mechanics, said the release.
Students will also complete a Quality of School Climate and Safety Survey prior to the content area tests. Per Kentucky regulations, all students in the assessed grade levels in Henderson County Schools are expected to take the test, said the release.
HCS released the following tips for test-taking success:
- Know when your child’s test dates are scheduled
- Do not schedule appointments when your child is testing
- Encourage your child to do his/her best on testing days
- Remind your child of the importance of reading directions carefully and not rushing through a test
- Ensure students get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and are at school on time each day ready to give their best effort.
Each school will be sharing a detailed testing schedule with families, said the release.
