Pryor ties school record as Henderson overcomes offensive struggles and penalties in district opener
It wasn’t the offensive performance Henderson County had grown accustomed to in recent weeks, but the Colonels found other ways to come away with a victory Friday night.
Behind three field goals from Miles Pryor, a defensive touchdown from Hezzi Harris and a late touchdown pass from Brody Belt, Henderson defeated Christian County 37-33 at the Stadium of Champions in its district opener.
The win improved Henderson to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in district play, but it didn’t come easily. Christian County’s size and speed caused problems for the Colonels’ passing attack, while penalties repeatedly disrupted both teams throughout the night.
“I thought our kids hung in there and battled. We overcame a lot,” Henderson County Head Coach John Elliott said. “I thought our kids just kept battling, and then tonight we prevailed.”
Christian County’s defensive approach also forced Henderson to adjust after weeks of success throwing the football.
“They were able to play us in man-to-man defense, and we had a couple opportunities early with Jackson (Loveless) deep and couldn’t take advantage of it,” Elliott said. “That was their game plan. Bring a lot of pressure on Brody and play man-to-man defense.”
Elliott said the Colonels still found some success against that pressure, particularly with short passes.
“We hit three or four screens for probably 70 yards, and that’s just the kind of big gamble defense they were playing,” Elliott said.
Even on a night when Henderson’s passing game struggled to find its usual rhythm, Belt accounted for three touchdowns, scoring twice on the ground before connecting with Christian Haygan for the eventual game-winner.
Friday’s contest marked the first-ever meeting between Henderson County and the newly formed Christian County Tigers, who are playing their inaugural season following the merger of Hopkinsville and Christian County high schools. The Tigers entered the matchup at 2-4 against a difficult schedule and were without starting quarterback Jasiah McCarley, who suffered a concussion against Frederick Douglass earlier in the season.
Pryor opened the scoring with a 41-yard field goal before Christian County answered with a 22-yard touchdown run from Paul Abren. Belt put Henderson back in front with a five-yard rushing touchdown, but the Tigers responded with a five-yard score from DeAsian Harris to take a 12-10 lead into the second quarter.
With Christian County continuing to pressure Belt and limit opportunities downfield, Henderson relied more heavily on its running game. Jack Dalton and Kingston Shidler helped move the football, but the Colonels had difficulty turning those drives into touchdowns.
Pryor’s 26-yard field goal gave Henderson a 13-12 halftime lead. The senior also attempted a 42-yarder before the break, but the kick bounced off the crossbar.
Despite possessing a strong leg, Pryor entered Friday’s game having made just one field goal all season, a 22-yarder. With Henderson’s offense frequently finding the end zone, the senior hadn’t been called upon often to attempt field goals.
The senior finished three-for-four Friday, connecting from 41, 26 and 43 yards. His final make, with 6:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, tied the school record of three field goals in a single game.
Pryor credited former Henderson kicker Carson Weiss and special teams coach Steve Tow for helping him develop.
“Shout out to Carson Weiss. He really helped me my first two years coming in,” Pryor said. “I watched and I learned from him and the work we put in with Coach (Steve) Tow.”
The Colonels extended their lead to 20-12 midway through the third quarter after Christian County mishandled a punt snap near its own goal line. Belt capitalized with a three-yard touchdown run, his second rushing score of the night.
Christian County answered when Abren scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown and converted the two-point attempt to tie the game at 20 heading into the fourth quarter.
While Christian County continued to find success on the ground, Henderson’s defense came up with several timely plays, led by junior Drake Davis-Chapman.
Davis-Chapman recorded two sacks, recovered a fumble and finished with six tackles. Parker Shappell led Henderson with seven tackles, while Luke Mann and Christian Haygan each added five.
Davis-Chapman credited Henderson’s defensive performance to playing more aggressively and trusting their instincts rather than overthinking assignments.
“Sometimes, we’re overthinking our plays and overthinking what we’re gonna do,” Davis-Chapman said. “I think that us going 100% and aggressive really changed the way they played.”
His pressure helped set up one of the game’s biggest plays early in the fourth quarter. After Davis-Chapman sacked quarterback Nehemiah Bailey, Harris intercepted a pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, putting Henderson ahead 27-20 with 9:48 remaining.

Abren responded with a 37-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 27 before a long kickoff return from Dalton helped put Henderson in position for Pryor’s record-tying 43-yard field goal.
The kick gave the Colonels a 30-27 lead with 6:04 remaining, but it lasted just 15 seconds of game time.
Abren broke loose for a 39-yard touchdown on Christian County’s next offensive play, giving the Tigers a 33-30 advantage with 5:49 left.
Henderson’s ensuing possession nearly ended after the Colonels found themselves facing fourth-and-19, but a roughing-the-punter penalty extended the drive. Another Christian County penalty helped move Henderson downfield before Belt found Haygan on a 25-yard touchdown pass after a fake screen left the tight end open downfield.
The touchdown capped an 11-play, 65-yard drive, and Pryor’s extra point gave Henderson a 37-33 lead with 3:44 remaining.
Christian County still had an opportunity to win. A 57-yard kickoff return gave the Tigers possession deep in Henderson territory, and despite another sack from Davis-Chapman, Bailey converted a fourth-and-13 with a 19-yard completion.
A pass interference penalty eventually helped Christian County reach Henderson’s 11-yard line, setting up one final opportunity to take the lead.
On fourth down, Bailey rolled left and threw toward the end zone, where a Christian County receiver made a diving attempt at the ball. The pass fell incomplete with 19 seconds remaining, allowing Henderson to kneel out the clock.
Despite struggling to find consistency in the passing game, the Colonels finished with 331 yards of offense, including 165 rushing and 166 passing. Belt completed 12 of 27 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown and just his second interception of the season. Dalton led Henderson with 85 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Shidler added 58 yards on 10 attempts. Harris caught five passes for 89 yards, and Jackson Loveless added four receptions for 45 yards.
Christian County rushed for 278 yards and Abren scored four touchdowns, but Henderson’s defense and special teams provided just enough to secure the win.
“They’ve got guys,” Elliott said of Christian County. “A lot of good players. They’re well coached. They play hard, and we were fortunate to come away with a win.”
Henderson enters its bye week at 4-4 before traveling to Paducah Oct. 23 to face McCracken County for its next district matchup.
