A Henderson County Detention Center prisoner who rode off from work detail on a bicycle last October pled guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from the incident.

Timothy Oliver was a jail trustee at the time and according to a previous article in the Hendersonian, he was outside working on bicycles that the jail takes in and fixes each year and then gives to children in the community.

At about noon on that day, he rode off on one, said former Jailer Bruce Todd then.

Todd said Oliver rode the bicycle toward Ohio Drive. Later an officer with the Henderson Police Department found the bike about two blocks down from the jail, he said.

The next morning, authorities with Kentucky State Police, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and Henderson Police Department found Oliver in Reed, where he lived before being incarcerated.

After a standoff, Oliver quickly exited a vehicle while briefly brandishing a flashlight prior to being taken into custody, said Commonwealth Attorney Herbert McKee, Jr., in a Monday release.

Officers believed he was attempting to make them believe it was a firearm, said the release.

The release said that the standoff occurred in broad daylight, in a very visible location, and no shots were fired, and no one was injured.

Oliver will get 10 years in prison for the most recent charges. He pled guilty to second-degree escape, first-degree wanton endangerment and theft by unlawful taking—bicycle.

According to the commonwealth’s attorney, this 10-year sentence will run consecutively with the 10-year sentence he had been serving for a total of 20 years. That previous charge was for third-degree burglary.
