More officers at local schools after another threat

Extra police officers were at North Middle School, South Middle School and Henderson County High School Wednesday morning because of concerns over a threat made on social media.

It’s the second day in a row that a threat has been made involving local schools. East Heights was put on lock down Tuesday after a call about a person with a rifle near the school, but when police arrived, they found nothing, Sgt. Bill Russell told the Hendersonian. Russell said the call came after someone first saw a social media post with the information.

Russell said the second threat occurred via Snapchat and was disseminated to areas around the country Tuesday evening, including to students at the three local schools. Students from schools in Evansville and as far away as Massachusetts received the post, Russell said.

He said the threat used language along the lines of “going to be shot up.”

Though it appears the post went to many people in different places, Henderson County Schools Director of Public Information Megan Mortis said the district doesn’t take chances.

“We take all these threats seriously,” she said.

In addition to the extra officers in the morning, she said extra officers will be at the schools in the afternoon for dismissal, as well. School resource officers will be at each school throughout the day, she said.

Russell said HPD is investigating the Snapchat threat.
