Numerous restaurants and organizations are offering help during SNAP pause

Here’s the list we’ve compiled so far–let us know if there are more

Henderson organizations and restaurants are offering assistance to those who need it during the SNAP pause caused by the current federal government shutdown.

Below is information that the Hendersonian has been able to round up.

  • Henderson Christian Community Outreach, 509 Fifth St. CCO will continue to offer food to those in need. CCO typically offers food for 40 people per day; Susan smith recently the organization has begun taking in 50 people per day. She said the organization will probably increase that number if SNAP benefits are paused. But Smith said the guiding rule will be that CCO will meet the needs of people daily.

Those who would like to donate to the Christian Community Outreach can drop off jelly, mac & cheese, dry pasta, pasta sauce, canned soups, canned fruit, canned corn, canned green beans, canned peas, canned carrots and canned Spaghetti-o’s, Manwich or something similar.

  • Henderson Salvation Army, 1213 Washington St. Salvation Army in Kentucky and Tennessee is conducting a “Feed Hope, Share Love” campaign to raise funds to support local need. Salvation Army will have food in food pantry and continue to serve hot lunches at 11 a.m. Monday-Saturday. The organization will use $7,000 grant from the Henderson County Fiscal Court to buy more food for those in need.
  • Harbor House Christian Men’s Shelter, 1204 Clay St. Harbor House serves two hot meals daily at 12 noon and 5 p.m. Open to all who are hungry. Donations are also accepted at this location.
  • Tacoholics, 122 First St.: Kids eat free during the SNAP pause.
  • El Sabor de mi Abuela, 108 Second St.:  Free meals to those affected by the SNAP pause, per the restaurant’s Facebook page.
  • Gigi’s, 48 S. Holloway St. Gigi’s is offering a free meal on Oct. 31. According to a post, the restaurant plans to offer more free meals in the future.
  • First Assembly of God, 2208 U.S. 60-East. Food donation drive-through on the first Wednesday of every month, 5:30 p.m.
  • Blue Dots of Henderson is hosting a free yard sale and food giveaway at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 at the JFK Center, 515 S. Alvasia St.
  • 4 Good Community, 1900 U.S. 41-North. 4 Good Community is offering food assistance 3-6 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Taco John’s, 1949 U.S. 41-North. Taco John’s is offering a hot meal to those who need it.
  • Grocery bag pickup is scheduled at the warming box near Hays Boat Ramp for Monday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. till the food is gone. There will be another pickup at the same location on Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. till the food is gone. Henderson County Homeless Coalition, Daniel Pitino Shelter Henderson and resident Taylor Heady are organizing.
  • The Henderson NAACP is hosting a clothing and non-perishable food drive at the Henderson County YMCA, Klutey Park Plaza. It’s 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Nov. 8.
  • St. Vincent de Paul on Alvasia Street is accepting food donations for its food pantry.
  • Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 511 Second St. Holy Name provides assistance through its food pantry from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Recipients are asked to bring an ID.
