Dear Editor:
The Ohio River is a source of joy and recreation for so many of us in Henderson. It’s a place where families and friends gather, and its beauty is a significant part of what makes our community so special. However, there is a dangerous trend on our waterways that we, as a community, must address together.
I am speaking about the dangerous and widespread practice of drinking while boating. It has become common to see people spend an entire day drinking alcohol on their boats, then operate those vessels with little thought for the safety of others. This is a serious issue that puts countless lives at risk every weekend. The dangers of operating a boat under the influence are just as real and deadly as those of driving a car. As a committed advocate for community well-being, I feel a responsibility to speak out against this threat, even when it has led to personal threats and resistance.
A key part of the challenge is that our community’s ability to respond to this issue is limited. The majority of our local stretch of the river is located in Henderson County; the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office does not have the equipment to patrol the water, according to correspondence I have had with HCSO. Additionally, our Henderson Police Department officers, while highly dedicated, are not currently certified to conduct DUI investigations on the water, making it very difficult to enforce safe boating laws.
These are not easy problems to solve, but they are our problems to solve together. The irresponsible behavior on the river is being socially tolerated, but we have to choose to stand against it. It will take a unified effort—from boaters, from concerned residents, and from all those who cherish our river—to raise awareness and find a clear path forward. I will continue to do my part to highlight this issue, and I hope we can all work collaboratively to make the Ohio River a safer place for everyone.
My dream is that the next generation doesn’t treat the Ohio River as a personal drinking club as we see it today! We have the power to make this a reality! Laws aren’t meant to be optional!
