A Corydon man has died from a gunshot wound after his girlfriend shot at him in what the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office believes was a test to determine if the body armor he was wearing worked.

“That’s the plausible explanation,” said Sheriff Chip Stauffer.

Deputies with the sheriff’s office found Patrick Ryan Jobe deceased in the garage of the residence he shared with girlfriend, Lauren Kate Jarvis, in the 4000 block of Rudy Road at about 11 p.m. Monday, Stauffer said.

Jarvis, 36, was charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Initially Jarvis told deputies that she did not know what happened to Jobe, according to the sheriff’s office. But when a Henderson County Coroner’s Office deputy was inspecting the body, detectives discovered a gunshot wound on Jobe’s back, said the sheriff in a release.

Stauffer said the bullet didn’t hit the body armor. He said there was a wound at the base of the neck.

Stauffer said that sheriff’s office detectives interviewed Jarvis and said that initially, it appears that there were no intentions to hurt or kill Jobe. He said there were no indicators in the relationship that Jarvis wanted to hurt or kill Jobe.

He also said there appears to be no intention of using the body armor for some later plan.

They were simply determining if the body armor would work.

“The assumption, I think, is that, ‘Let’s see if it works,’” the sheriff said.

He said toxicology tests will occur at the state medical examiner’s office in Louisville.

Stauffer said second-degree manslaughter carries a punishment of five to 10 years with parole possibility after serving 20% of a sentence.

Jarvis is lodged in the Henderson County Detention Center. She is being held on a $100,000 full cash bond, according to the sheriff’s office. She was scheduled to appear in court 10 a.m. Thursday.
