With frigid temperatures expected later tonight, motorists are urged to conclude any business they may have before any moisture left on the roadways begins to freeze, creating potential black ice conditions, said a release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The National Weather Service continues to predict a drastic drop in temperatures tonight, which could last for several days. The extreme cold can result in the formation of ice on the roadway, sometimes in unexpected places, and with an extended cold spell in the forecast, that ice could stick around even during daytime hours.

Once temperatures outside drop below approximately 15 degrees, the effectiveness of salt to melt ice is considerably reduced, making it harder to clear slick spot on the roadway. Black ice can be very hard to spot, and can quickly become a hazard to unsuspecting motorists, especially at night.

Crews around District 2 of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet were back on the road today, with the primary focus being on addressing any lingering snow and ice issues with B and C routes and clearing trees or low hanging limbs from state roadways. Crews will not be working overnight tonight, but will pickup tomorrow morning where they leave off today.

Motorists are encouraged to be considerate of KYTC equipment and personnel they encounter on the roadway as they continue the process of keeping our state highways safe to travel on. Anyone who needs to be out is encouraged to do so before the cold front sweeps across the district later tonight.
