The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is scheduled to begin repairs to the U.S. 41 Twin Bridges in Henderson on Monday with work expected to continue throughout the week.
The work includes repairs to the southbound bridge’s support structure, including replacement of damaged rocker bearings and repairs to a structural support beam, said a KYTC release.
Completing these repairs will allow KYTC to begin transitioning traffic back to its normal configuration, with the goal of reopening all four lanes much sooner than the expected Thanksgiving deadline, said the release.
Because most work is going on below the bridge, motorists will likely not see much change in the existing traffic flow for the first half of the week.
But on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, motorists should expect traffic on the southbound bridge to switch from the left lane to the right lane as work progresses, said KYTC.
During the final phase of the repair project, there will be a full closure of the southbound bridge on Friday night. During this closure, all traffic crossing the Ohio River will utilize the northbound bridge.
The northbound bridge, which has been carrying two northbound lanes and one southbound lane, will be reduced to one 15-foot lane in each direction.
This configuration will only be in place on Friday night. Once work is completed, crews will begin the process of moving both southbound lanes back to the southbound bridge.
Motorists could continue to see some delays on the northbound bridge while it is restripped to its normal two-lane configuration, said the release.
