HMP&L to begin power pole replacement project
This week, Henderson Municipal Power & Light along with subcontractor 5 Star Electric will remove and replace power poles along South Green Street near its intersection with Borax Drive.
The replacements are being installed so that larger conductor sizes and updating load requirements can be accommodated, said a release from HMP&L.
According to the release, the project also includes the removal of existing transmission lines and replacing them with upgraded transmission lines which are designed to increase transmission capacity and improve system performance.
This transmission line upgrade is necessary to support current and future system loading and to maintain safe, reliable electric service, said the release.
The work area will run 1.3 miles from the HMP&L substation just east of the Borax Dr./US 41A-60 intersection and head north on South Green Street to the intersection with Sand Lane.
From that intersection the project continues east a distance of one mile on Sand Lane ending at the HMP&L substation just west of the Atkinson Street intersection.
HMP&L said the project will run from mid-May through the end of July and will go from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday during that time.
During the first phase of the project, work on north bound South Green Street will be down to one lane of north bound traffic at different intervals as the day-by-day project progresses north, said HMP&L.
In the second phase, Sand Lane will have certain segments down to one lane traffic as work progresses from west to east, said HMP&L.
Motorists and property owners along these routes need to be aware and keep abreast of the work schedule through these areas, said HMP&L.

Henderson County Schools Summer Meal Program
Henderson County Schools will offer a new way to provide meals for students this summer.
Through the USDA Summer SUN Meals Program, children ages 18 and under can receive free meals throughout the summer, according to a release from HCS.
Each child may receive seven days’ worth of meals each week, said the release.
Families must sign up in advance to receive meals and must register for the specific site they will use for meal pick-up.
HCS’ Summer Meals Program will have a kickoff event 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at North Middle School football field.
Those interested may visit the district website to apply. www.henderson.kyschools.us
HCS listed some important reminders for participants:
• Children may only pick up meals at the site where they are signed up.
• A child cannot be signed up at more than one site during the same week.
• Only a legal guardian may pick up meals for a child who is not present.
• Meal location changes must be made at least one week in advance.
Additionally, meals to go pick-up locations will be open on May 26, June 1 and June 8, said HCS.
From 12 noon-1:30 p.m., A.B. Chandler Elementary, South Heights Elementary and Spottsville Elementary will be open as pick-up locations. From 4-6 p.m. on those days, Bend Gate will serve as a pick-up location.
The locations may also be open on June 15, June 22 and June 29, but that will depend on participation and staffing, said the release.
HCS also provided information about other meal sites in the community. These locations will also provide seven days’ worth of meals, said the release.
An example is that a church may offer lunch during the day time and send home a shelf stable breakfast for the following day. Then on Friday, send home two shelf stable breakfasts and lunches for the weekend, said the release.
