The 2025 season brought a competitive edge and saw high potential for Henderson County’s boys’ and girls’ tennis programs. Though the Colonels’ state tournament run ended early, both teams had performances that set the stage for continued success in seasons to come.
The boys’ team capped off its spring campaign as Region 2 runner-up, sending four players to the KHSAA State Tournament in Lexington. Sophomores Jaxton Duncan and Jace Evans qualified in singles, while seniors Carson Weiss and Chaz Audas competed in doubles.
However, all were knocked out in the opening round after drawing top matchups.
“Chaz and Carson had a tough draw at state, but they played that team really well,” said head coach Marilyn Dorsey. “Still, they were a really strong doubles team that we’ll miss.”
With Weiss and Audas graduating, the team will look to its younger core. Dorsey believes the pieces are in place for the next step in 2026.
“Our boys’ team is still going to be really strong,” she said. “We’re returning everybody but our top doubles team. I believe they have a shot at winning the region next year.”
Duncan, now a three-time state qualifier, echoed that outlook.
“I’m not happy with how I played in the tournament, losing in the (region) championship,” he said. “But I will try to win it next year. As a team though, we just want to take down Madisonville.”
He added that continued training in the offseason could make the difference. “As long as we keep playing throughout the summer, I think we’ll have a good team next year,” Duncan said. “We will be well set.”
On the girls’ side, senior Jaylee Duncan represented the Lady Colonels at state. She faced McCracken County’s Sophie Hollowell in the first round, touted as one of the top 16 players in the state.
Though the result didn’t go her way, her impact will not be easily forgotten by the Lady Colonels.
“We have to have some girls step up to fill the loss of Jaylee Duncan,” said Dorsey.
Looking ahead, Jaylee Duncan wants the program to continue to evolve. “I hope we keep building on our teamwork and skill level,” she said. “I see the program growing stronger.”
Dorsey remains optimistic as both teams look to 2026.
“I’m looking forward to a great season next year,” she said. “I think we’ll be very strong with both boys and girls.”
