The Henderson County Colonels powered their way to the championship at the Generals Christmas Classic held over the weekend at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown. The Cols went undefeated in the tournament, finishing 3-0 and boosting their season record to 7-2.
On Saturday, the Colonels opened with a convincing 69-34 victory over Louisville Western. They jumped ahead quickly with a 21-0 run, controlled the game with strong defense, and dominated the boards. Amare Stewart led the scoring effort with 22 points.
Later that same day, Henderson County secured its spot in the final with a 60-50 win over Marion County. The Colonels took control in the fourth quarter with a decisive run and held off a late push. Amare Stewart finished with 17 points and 5 rebounds, Xavion Johnson contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds, and Zayden Martin added 10 points.
In the title game on Sunday, the Colonels defeated host Thomas Nelson 62-56 in overtime. The contest was tied 51-51 after regulation, but Henderson County took over in the extra period, outscoring the Generals 11-5. Xavion Johnson led with 23 points, Amare Stewart added 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Zayden Martin scored 9 points.
Amare Stewart was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He averaged more than 17 points per game across the three contests, showcasing his sharp shooting as well as rebounding capabilities throughout the weekend.
Henderson County (7-2) returns to action at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 27, when they host Louisville DeSales as part of the Faupel Automotive Colonel Basketball Classic.
